Can I ask two? Tell me about Artemis and Kite.

Oooh, good ones. I'm going to talk about Artemis first, since I'm afraid I may never shut up about Kite.

- Artemis was always my favorite in the Greek pantheon. Whenever I took those little "what greek god(ess) are you?" stupid quizzes, I wanted to get her and was inevitably pissed when all the answers that led to her were obviously skewed toward "outdoorsy and animal lover." I'm not saying I don't like the outdoors or that I don't like animals, but I always felt like there was more to her than that.

One of the first Artemis myths I ever heard was in the planetarium in elementary school; they were pointing out all the constellations and when they got to Orion, they said that Artemis had loved him and her brother (for reasons they didn't say or that escape my memory) tricked her into killing him. She mourned him and placed him in the stars to see him always. Something about that struck such a chord with me that I've never been able to buy into other versions of the Orion story. It just seemed so natural to me that this virgin in a family of nymphos has a love get taken away from her--that she takes away from herself--so she has to swear off men to spare everyone involved the pain she feels like has to result from it.

Basically what I'm trying to say is Artemis is complicated and I love her for that, so when she showed up in my headspace after the other milli!Artemis dropped out, I couldn't write the app fast enough.

- I have a lot of favorites with her but I'm going to narrow it down to two. 1) Artemis and Medusa, because I think this says lovely things about how she is with family, how she is sometimes pulled between to halves of her family and does her best to walk that line. 2) is, naturally, Artemis healing Paul, and not just for the obvious reasons. This the first time in a long time where she heals not just a mortal, but a friend. Also, I think there's something lovely about her banter in this one because there are moments when it's easy because Paul is a guy and moments when it isn't easy at all because Paul is a guy and Artemis does not have a good track record with guys, romantically or otherwise.

- Favorite original aspect is Artemis' stupid hat collection. I'm not even sure why, just that it popped into my head one day and clicked and makes perfect sense even without any supporting evidence.

- Last off screen thing: Artemis went home after the Vegas!plot and took a good long shower. She hit up the local Brew Thru for some beers and the library for books on South American gods and masks, then sprawled out on the beach with the girls for some relaxation time. Her nose, much to her annoyance, sunburned.

- Last words: ...okay, this one just came up out of nowhere and slapped me, but now I can't shake the feeling that if Artemis keeled over and only had time for one more sentence, it would be "I'm sorry." Because she feels like she has so much left to do, because there are people that she'd be leaving behind, because she was never supposed to leave in the first place.

- Next thing for her: hmmm, well, working through the aftermath of the Vegas!plot, I think; getting in some threads with Team Bait and the rest of the crew, and Coyote in particular. Artemis is probably the only team member who isn't out and out pissed at Coyote for not filling them in better, if only because she's grown to expect games like that from her own family. If the shit had hit the fan a little harder, she might be more pissed, but mostly she found it a rather sick sort of funny.

And now, Kite.

- Okay, so back when I was in about the...fourth grade? Fifth grade? I came up with the idea for my Great Fantasy Epic. It was a standalone about a princess named Falcon who kicked ass and took names and had to fight off her evil, exiled older brother from taking over the throne. She did, naturally, and married her childhood best friend and they lived happily ever after. Eventually, I got the idea for a second story, about Falcon's kids--twins, Osprey and Hawk (girl and boy respectively). They end up taking an army to help put down some crazy uprising in The Country Next Door, and are halfway into the thing before they realize that the people doing the uprising are the good guys and they've been killing the wrong people. They switch sides, fight the good fight, fall in love, find husbands and live happily ever after.

And then I got the idea for the third story. Osprey and Hawk, given that they both married people of common birth, are co-ruling as Queen and King. Osprey has given birth to three children--Eagle, Kestrel and Kite (like I could really drop the naming convention now)--and all's right in the world. Until Osprey's husband and consort is killed. It's a piddly little border skirmish with criminals, he shouldn't have even been there, but he ends up dead and Osprey ends up crazy. She gets locked in a tower, originally for her own protection and then just because no one trusts her out of it, and Hawk takes over full rule. The kids grow up with varying levels of dysfunction and ultimately end up in a fight that will determine whether or not their world gets to continue existing.

And then, naturally, I never actually wrote any of this down and just turned it over and over in my head from time to time. The first two "books" faded into the background as either cliched or not long enough to be an actual novel, but the third one stayed pretty strong.

And then a few months ago Kite strolled back into my head and went "you know what? I'm awesome and you kind of shortchanged me before, but I forgive you and we could have a lot of fun together, so what do you say?" The rest is history.

- Favorite scenes...I think that'd have to be wounded!Kite, because each of the threads says a lot about her. I've always felt like you see the truest side of people when they're sick/hurt and Kite is no exception. And oh god, I forgot until just now that that was her first Tiwa thread and it was SPECTACULAR.

- Favorite original aspect: Kite's hidden talent is a very detailed knowledge of diplomacy and protocol. She prides herself on having ditched all of her etiquette instructors, but she's a voracious reader and thinks all the little rituals and traditions of other countries are fascinating. She can play the political game as well as anyone; the fact that she chooses not to most of the time leads to people underestimating her and that's just fine by her, so long as she gets to totally yank the rug out from under them at some point.

- Last thing she did off screen: Went and saw the next performance of Thief of Hearts. Went carousing with the cast afterward and retired for the night with the lead actress, a vivacious redhead named Marissa.

- Kite's last words: "don't tell my mother."

- Next thing I'm writing for her (other than more threads) is probably going to be kite vs. the enterprise part 2: electric boogaloo. Basically she ends up dragging McCoy back to her world for her canon's endgame, all-or-nothing battle.
